Riverside Drive Bridge Over Los Angeles River (HBP)

As the prime consultant, Biggs Cardosa led a team of consultants for the widening of the Riverside Drive Bridge which spans over the Los Angeles River. The existing bridge, originally built in 1936, consists of five arched concrete T-beam spans. In addition to design services Biggs Cardosa assisted the City with HBP funding. Construction costs were significantly reduced after a liveload evaluation of the structure indicated that the bridge could carry current design loads making the bridge a candidate for widening rather than replacement.

Colorado Street Bridge

Biggs Cardosa was retained to pursue alternative demolition methods to reduce construction costs for the restoration of an historic bridge originally constructed in 1913. Demolition sequences were revised to permit sequential operations from one end towards the other. These alternate sequences required a bracing system to resist large forces caused by unbalanced arch thrusts at the piers. The structure model was modified over 60 times as demolition progressed.

Nacimiento Lake Drive Bridge Replacement at the San Antonio River

The County of Monterey originally retained Biggs Cardosa to provide project management and structural engineering to evaluate the existing Nacimiento Lake Drive Bridge as part of the Monterey County Seismic Retrofit Program administered by the County of Monterey with Caltrans oversight and HBP funding.  The existing structure is an 89-year-old, 4-span steel pratt through-truss that carries Nacimiento Lake Drive over the San Antonio River in rural southern Monterey County. Two retrofit strategies were proposed.  The first consisted of modifying the superstructure and replacing the weak substructure.  The second strategy considered was the total replacement of the bridge.  A cost-benefit analysis of the two alternatives was done, and the total replacement option was selected. The new structure will be a two-span post-tensioned box girder structure approximately 270 feet long and will be placed approximately 140 feet to the east of the existing structure.

Leimert Boulevard Bridge over Sausal Creek

The Leimert Bridge is a fixed arch bridge, spanning Dimond Canyon. Completed in 1926, the concrete and steel bridge is 357 feet long and 117 feet high. At the time it was constructed, Leimert Bridge was considered to be the largest fixed arch bridge on the West Coast. The Leimert Boulevard Bridge was designated as a landmark of special historical, cultural, aesthetic or engineering interest, or value of a historic nature, by the City of Oakland in 1980 and denoted as eligible for the Caltrans Historic Bridge Inventory in 2004. Biggs Cardosa performed a peer review on the originally proposed bridge retrofit design of the Leimert Boulevard Bridge over Sausal Creek. Subsequent to the peer review effort, Biggs Cardosa was selected by the City to provide project management and structural engineering services to redesign the seismic retrofit of this historic bridge and implement the proposed alternative retrofit strategy.
