Mixed Use-Residential

Santana Row Building 2

Biggs Cardosa designed the 5-story mixed-use building at the corner of Stevens Creek Blvd. and Santana Row. The project consists of a five-story core and shell, mixed-use retail and office space with an adjacent three level Parking Garage. The building is comprised of approximately 15,000 sf of Premium Ground Floor Retail Space and 65,000 sf of Class-A Office Space on floors two through five. The building features a braced-frame lateral system that keeps most interior space and exterior façade obstruction-free; a large terrace at the second floor; and a cantilevered, double-skin curtain wall system designed to cut energy costs. With its many sustainable design features, this technologically advanced addition to Santana Row received LEED Gold Certification.

Bay Street

Biggs Cardosa was selected to provide design services for a 1.8-million sf major retail and residential project. This new urban mixed-use project features 400,000 sf of retail, a 100,000 sf cinema and a 1,600-car parking garage. The overall goal for the project was to create a downtown shopping center that would serve as a neotraditional Main Street and become a communal center for the City. The project was found to be economically feasible only after we developed value-engineering solutions to save $8 million in construction costs.

Biggs Cardosa performed the structural design for a 3-story mixed-use structure.  The project consists of a below-grade parking structure, first floor office and parking, and 2-story wood-framed superstructure consisting of 15 luxury condominiums.  There is approximately 20,000 sf of residential living space and 5,700 sf of office space.  The residential floors are wood-framed over a post-tensioned concrete podium slab.  The office ground floor is also a post-tensioned concrete slab.  The basement foundation consists of a reinforced concrete mat slab.  The building was designed per the 2010 California Building Code.

Ohlone Block C

Biggs Cardosa performed structural design for the 268 unit luxury apartment project in downtown San Jose.  Block C is phase one of a three-phase buildout of an entire city block central to downtown jobs, entertainment, and public transportation.  Biggs Cardosa was responsible for the design of the four story wood-framed superstructure situated on an elevated concrete podium.  Notable challenges included the requirement to accommodate the irregular and non-stacking perimeter window layout while producing an economical and effective shear wall design. To accomplish this, finite element models were developed in order to analyze the wood shear walls with openings.  This resulted in an efficient design which took advantage of long wall lengths while accounting for various window configurations.
