Health Care
Fremont Surgery CenterBiggs Cardosa developed construction documents and provided construction support services for the seismic retrofit and renovation of a four-story 75,000 sf office building. The selected retrofit approach consisted of modifying the existing moment connections by using the patented slotted-web connections developed by Seismic Structural Design Associates (SSDA) and by controlling the column-base rotations (thereby limiting the drifts) by adding new steel beams below the first floor slab. The project’s primary purpose was to convert the office space into a medical facility. The surgery center space includes seven operating rooms, four procedure suites, pre-operation and post-operation space and six exterior rooms for utility services.

VA Hospital - Building 650 ExpansionThis project includes design of a new 9,500 ft 2 single-story, steel-framed structure with a braced frame lateral system. The new structure will be built as a seismically separated addition to Building 650. The project also includes evaluation and design of seismic bracing for existing nonstructural components in the existing one-story and three-story portions of building 650. Nonstructural bracing in the one-story portion of the building is required to meet the criteria for an essential facility.
